RC Scale Hydro Resources...

Here are some places to find parts and other resources:

Groups and Clubs:

Electric Scale Unlimiteds (ESU): 1/7th scale electric hydros racing in Western Washington State, USA. Most of their races take place about a 45-minute drive north of Seattle at Twin Lakes, Marysville, WA. They now seem to be in the process of joining with Unlimiteds Northwest below.

Unlimiteds Northwest (UNW): 1/8th scale nitro, and now 1/7th scale electrics with ESU above. They are primarily a Western Washington State club in the United States. They broke with RC/U when RC/U got too big.

NAMBA (North American Model Boat Association): American group for powered model boats

RC Unlimiteds (RC/U): 1/8th scale nitro and electric hydros. Their website says they are in Seattle, but their schedule is for mostly eastern WA.

Classic Thunder: 1/10th scale electrics in the Seattle area. Western Washington State, USA.

ERCU: 1/10th scale electrics. Their website is pretty uninformative for anyone not already belonging to them. But from what little I can gather, they race 1/10th scale electric hydros south of Seattle.

Welcome to my scale hydroplace build blog!

Hi, Welcome to my blog for building 1/8th & 1/7th scale radio controlled hydroplanes! I've never built one so this intent of this blog is to help myself to take notes as well as help other builders know where thing went well and where they didn't. So far I haven't been able to find a construction manual for how to build one of these so I may have to write one if this project goes well! I've got the plans and for two boats; the 1952 Slo-Mo-Shun V and the 1957 Miss Wahoo U-77. However I only have the laser cut frames so far for the Miss Wahoo so that's the boat I'll begin with. Below are some pictures of the new Miss Wahoo U-77. It's a reproduction boat built off the original plans by the Hydroplane Museum. I hope to make my scale hydro as close to these pictures as possible. It's a gorgeous wooden boat!  So far I have: The plans for the 1957 U-77 Miss Wahoo from Newton Marine . The laser cut frames for h...

Miss Wahoo 1/8th scale RC Hydroplane Frames Assembled

Lots of progress this weekend on the 1956/57 Miss Wahoo U-77 1/8th scale RC hydroplane. Got all the frames installed, and a few of the stringers. Will finish with the stringers later this week. Also got the two bottom panels installed. Some of the frames needed a little persuasion to stay put, so push-pins came in handy. Here you can see some of the forward stringers on the bottom. These are the ones that will be epoxied to the bottom panel. Here is the aft bottom panel roughed out. Use packaging tape where you might have some epoxy squeeze-out. Epoxy doesn't stick to the tape. Made lots of progress this weekend! I'm using my rubber-band clamping system on this boat. It was used extensively on my RC sailboats for the frames and especially for the planking. Here is is used to keep downward pressure on the frames, and inward pressure on the outer side panels. It's very adaptable so be creative!  The main add-on to ma...

Slo-Mo-Shun V laser cut frames

I've been hard at work designing a wooden RC sailboat from 1949 called the Sun Wind. You can see it at my other blog: www.rcmodelyachts.com . But to take a break from that, I've also returned to designing frames for the 1951 Slo-Mo-Shun V hydroplane. Here's how it looks right now: I have access to a laser cutter at work, so I may just cut these and see how they fit, before cutting them for the purposes of completing a boat. Here's the real Slo-Mo V which is currently at the Hydroplane & Raceboat Museum near Seattle. Peace!
